The Feasibility Study considers the implementation of several railway corridors, with a total length of approximately 900 km, in order to attract international investors and develop a railway manager in the future, positively impacting region’s socioeconomic development.

The new rail network will make it possible to establish excellent corridors for the transport of goods mainly and passengers between major cities, such as Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, connecting with other parts within the region and the rest of Iraq and playing an important role in transit between neighboring countries.

The Market Study will analyze the tendencies and comparative markets defining possible scenarios between 2020-2050, which will serve as the basis for the Demand and Traffic Study in order to quantify and characterize the current demand (passengers and goods) and estimate the potential demand, evaluating the socioeconomic and profitability of the new railway network.

The Engineering Study will provide a technical solution through the design of the railway corridors defined on a large scale, including the layout and infrastructure of these, definition of stations and intermodal connections, maintenance workshops and garages and propulsion system of trains.

The building cost needed for the railway infrastructure included in the CAPEX shall be estimated, which together with the operating costs (OPEX) defined in the Operation Plan will set the profitability of the entire rail system and passenger and freight services in the period 2022-2050.

An important part of the project covers the evaluation of the Environmental Impact, and the mitigation of possible risks associated with the uncertainty of the flow of costs and benefits throughout the life of the project, as well as the development of a Social and Legal study, recommending the best structure and delivery model for the railway project.
